Introduction

Latinos represent the single largest ethnic population in Los Angeles County. A disproportionate number of victims and criminal defendants are Latino. It is important to the credibility of the justice system that Latinos participate in both the dispensation of justice and the creation of policy. In light of the increasing numbers of the Latino population, and their evolving civic activity, a liaison between the Latino community and the justice system is warranted. The Latino Prosecutors Association will provide a forum to address the various criminal justice concerns of the Latino community, prosecutors, and the legal profession.

Experience has taught that many Latino people are skeptical of the justice system for a variety of reasons: the language barrier, their own experience with corrupt officials, and the perception that non-Latinos occupy most positions of authority. The Latino Prosecutors Association will address these issues by engaging in activities that make the public aware of the numerous Latino prosecutors who can identify and relate to their concerns and who can foster respect and confidence in the integrity of the criminal justice system as a whole.

The Association will also promote the District Attorney's Office and other law enforcement agencies as desirable careers, and help students understand and participate in the justice system.
